Ronda Martin - K.C. May
My name is Ronda my husband Ron and I lost our little girl to Vasa Previa. She was born on 4-3-99 at 8.12 am. She was 8 lbs 12 oz and perfectly heathly. We only had one problem during our pregnancy and that was placenta previa witch cleared up about a month before I was due. K.C. was due on 4-8-99.
Three days before she was born I started leaking. We went into the hospital on friday night and they induced my labor around 10 p.m. The doctor came in again around 12 midnight and gave me another check up. Nothing was happening yet . He came back in again around 4 am and still nothing. When he came in around 7.30 I was having labor pains but the baby had not dropped nor was I dialated yet. For some reason he had a surgeon come in to see me. I do not know why he never said why the surgeon decided not to examine me because I was in labor. It was now around 7.40 am. The surgeon left and my doctor said he wanted to examine me himself. I went in to the bathroom before he examined me and that is when I noticed a large amount of blood in the speciman dish in the toilet. The dish was full of blood I opened the door and told the nurse. She in turn told my doctor that the speciman dish was full of bright red blood . The doctor paused and then said: 'Oh it is probably just her cervix bleeding'. He never came in to see how much blood there was. I then proceeded back to the bed. I had a contraction and so it took me a minute to get back to the bed . When I made it back to the bed my doctor examined me. He then sat down at the foot of the bed and he looked puzzled.
All of a sudden I felt what I thought was my water breaking and a second later another, but this one had clumps in it. I found out later that the clumps that I felt were blood clotts. My doctor just sat there for what seemed like a life time but was only a minute and his chin hit the floor (I never did see the blood on the bed myself). He finally said we have to do an emergency C- section. By this time it was around 8 00 am. When they pulled her out of me she was lifeless. It took them fifteen minutes of working on her to get some life signs back. She was born at 8.12 a.m. They said it took only 6 minutes to get me in the room and get her out of me.
So I don't blame the Vasa Previa for the loss of my baby, it was the cause of the problem but I blame my doctor for her death. Because in my mind she died from him waithing for 15 minutes to do something. I know that even if he would have done something right when I noticed the blood in the toilet she still could have died but with him waiting so long she never even had a chance. I now know that she died before she came out of me not 2 days later that was just her body that died then. But I am glad for those 2 days that I got to have her here to talk to and kiss even though she herself was watching from above. Thank you for your time. Love and God bless.
